News Update :Drama As Impeached Imo Deputy Speaker, Iwuanyanwu Reinstates Self, Leads Assault On Assembly, Oversees Speaker's Impeachment
The impeached deputy speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu has been reinstated, SaharaReporters learnt.
This comes as the Speaker, Paul Emeziem was illegally impeached. He was said to have been impeached following the decision of just 8 members out of the 27 lawmakers in the House.
Kennedy Ibeh who is the member representing Obowo State Constituency was sworn in immediately as the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly.
"Iwuanyanwu was there as they impeached the Speaker, Paul Emeziem. He reinstated himself. That is Imo State for you; someone who had been impeached, came back and removed the Speaker," a source said.
Sources told SaharaReporters that Iwuanyanwu on Monday stormed the House alongside some security operatives to ensure the impeachment of the Speaker, Emeziem.
Sources said the Speaker heard about the planned removal and quickly drove to the House of Assembly but was denied access by the security operatives.
One of the sources said, "The Speaker has been impeached. The impeached Deputy Speaker, Iwuanyanwu and some security operatives stormed the House
"Only 8 lawmakers removed the Speaker in a House of 27 lawmakers. Iwuanyanwu is close to the governor and believed to have the governor's backing. And that was why the security operatives were even with the deputy speaker, and stormed the House together with him.
"They removed the speaker with 8 lawmakers and put Kennedy Ibeh of Obowo State Constituency there."
Emeziem was allegedly tear-gassed and beaten up by the security operatives on the orders of Iwuanyanwu who is said to have the backing of the governor, Hope Uzodinma.
Iwuanyanwu was on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, impeached by 18 out of the 27 lawmakers in the House.
While Hon. Amara was sacked from the seat as deputy speaker, six other suspended lawmakers were recalled by the former speaker Hon Paul Emeziem.
Meanwhile, four members of Imo State House of Assembly of APC extraction, who were suspended on the 8th of July 2021 by Speaker Paul Emeziem, have clearly disassociated themselves and their signatures from any action to the purported impeachment of Iwuanyanwu as the Deputy Speaker.
The affected lawmakers were Hon. Domnic Ezerioha representing Oru West state constituency, the new speaker Hon. Kennedy Ibeh for Obowo, Hon. Uche Ogbuagu-Ikeduru state constituency and Hon. Michael Njoku, representing Ihitte Uboma State constituency.
They denied their names and signatures which appeared in the documents which the former Speaker, Emeziem was parading as evidence of 18 signatories that signed the impeachment of the deputy speaker.
They, therefore, stated without equivocation that they were suspended unjustly.
